When it comes to swimming pool openings it’s best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, many things can happen during the winter that will damage the pool and the supply equipment such as the filter, water flow lines, and pump. Some of the things that can occur include frozen water pipes inside and outside the pool itself, the cracking pool walls, filters and pumps that become unrepairable, damaged covers, torn pool liners, and other problems.  Taking the right steps to open a pool will assure that it can be maintained to give you many years of enjoyment. The swimming pool professionals that work with the Long Island Pool company are among the best of professionals.  Many have worked at the best of pool companies before they come to the Long Island Pool company. The most important reason for winterizing a swimming pool is to remove the water and keep out the moisture that can break or destroy pumps, water lines, filters and other components.

The Steps To A Successful Pool Opening

1.  When opening a pool it’s important to ascertain the proper calcium, ph, and shock levels.  Alkalinity, ph, and hardness should all be properly balanced. It will be much easier to keep your pool crystal clear and swimmable with a proper opening service.  Be sure to maintain your pool according to the manufacturers recommendations.  It is most important to make sure that the water in a pool and it’s plumbing and other components doesn’t freeze.

2.  When water freezes in a swimming pool, it expands and the pressure can be great enough to damage every part of a pool including the walls, the plumbing lines, and the filtration system.  One of the most important things to do is to add the proper chemicals and to remove the pump and filter.  This is true for most climates, including warmer ones such as Arizona, Florida, and parts of Texas. The Long Island Pool Company has been closing swimming pools in East Northport, Woodbury, Syosset, Levitown, Garden City, Manhasset, Massapequa, Sayville, Port Jefferson, Huntington, Dix Hills, Woodbury, Malvern, Brookville, East Northport, Kings Park, Oyster Bay, Southampton, Westhampton, the North Fork, Garden City, and everywhere else on Long Island for over thirty five years.

3.   A pools water should be lowered to a point that is just below the mouth of your skimmer boxes. The skimmer boxes will have a much lesser chance of being damaged by water if there is any freezing when the water is lowered below them.

4.  Use an Water Blocker or “Aquador” at the mouth of the skimmer boxes. The Aquador is an item that acts like a damn for the skimmer boxes, keeping excess water out during the long winter. It also acts to prevent any excess water from getting in between the pools liner and the walls of the pool.

5.  A pools plumbing lines should be blown out to remove any excess moisture.  Either an air compressor, a shop vac, or a leaf blower should be used for the purpose of blowing out the pools filter lines.  Plug the lines after blowing to keep them dry. It is best to use a threaded plug fitting for keeping the lines dry whenever possible.  Use an “O” ring which is a rubber gasket whenever possible. A good gasket seal will prevent any water from going into the plumbing and filter pipes. If you have the  “freeze plugs” that are made for this purpose, then we recommend using these.

6.  Drain The Filter Components.   Under the base of the filter unit you will usually find a plug which should be opened to empty the water from the filter.  There may be an air relief valve at the top of the filter unit, and if there is, you should open it. Most units will also have a pressure gauge and if it does, you should remove it. If there is a multiport valve, then it should be turned to the “winterize” point. After this you can completely drain the pump. On some pumps, there may be two drain plugs.  If there is, you should open both of them.

7. Drain Any Remaining Chemicals  (chlorine/bromine tablets) and let them run out of your feeder so that there are no chemicals are left there. If the chemicals are left in the feeder, it can damage the unit and other components. Now you should be able to let the water out of the chemical feeder and automatic cleaner pump, heater, and any other filter equipment that may have water in it.

Final Closing Steps:

If you put all the plugs that you have removed into the pump strainer basket, they will be easily found in the spring.

It is a good idea to take the pressure gauge inside for the winter because water collects in its tube which can freeze and cause breakage.

You should cover your pool to keep out the debris. The type of cover you use will depend upon several factors.
